Two by two
When beginning this first book in the Photo Ark series, I was faced with the enormity of Joel Sartore’s archive—thousands of portraits of creatures great and small, categorized only by their taxonomy and the level of extinction threat they faced. After much discussion with the edit team and our publisher, we decided to pair them as if they were truly boarding a mythical ark to survival, and organized the book around this concept, displaying their images, for the most part, two by two.
